Currently Professor of Organisational Sociology in the School of Business and Management, Queen Mary University of London, and a member of STAF’s Performing Leadership Differently (PLD) Steering Committee, Prof. Gerard Hanlon’s research examines how work and the occupational structure have altered in the past twenty years with reference to middle class professional occupations such as accountants, lawyers and medical personnel. His work argues that due to the changing nature of the state, the ongoing and altering internationalisation of the division of labour, the organisational change to polarise middle class work knowledge work and precarious knowledge work have changed the nature of trust between the middle class, work, and the state – all of which could be summed up as a political economy of the middle class.

He has worked at a variety of UK Universities, has been Head of the School of Business and Management at Queen Mary, and has taught and researched in the fields of business, law, political economy and sociology.  He received his PHD from Trinity College Dublin.
