BROADER CONTEXT:

Since 2015, through The Sick of the Fringe (TSOTF), our international, arts, health, and wellbeing programme; we have supported artists presenting at the Fringe festivals.

In 2019 we commissioned four writers to reflect on their time at the Edinburgh fringe, in the hope of promoting further conversation about access, sustainability and identity at the largest arts festival in the world. Read these below and visit our dedicated site to find out more about TSOTF.

As part of our strategic partnership aiming to remove barriers and improve wellbeing for artists at the Fringe, in 2022 the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society and STAF developed the Fringe Artist Forums as regular space to hear the thoughts and ideas of the people who sit at the heart of this amazing festival – the artists.

The Fringe Artist Forum series aimed to bring artists together with members of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society (EFFS) and Something to Aim For (STAF) teams to discuss the future of the Fringe.

Through creating a series of constructive, open and supportive online sessions we supported the Fringe to reimagine its future informing work in creating a fairer, more inclusive arts sector, leading to the development of their 6 Development Goals:

1 Thriving artists: Be the best place in the world for emerging artists to perform and the best platform for talent to emerge.

2 Fair work: Eradicate any remaining unfair or exploitative work conditions at The Fringe.

3 Climate action: Become a carbon net zero event by 2030.

4 Equitable Fringe: Who you are and where you are from is not a barrier to attending or performing at the Edinburgh Fringe.

5 Good citizenship: The Fringe, a force for good in and for the city of Edinburgh.

6 Digital evolution: Enhance the live Fringe experience by ensuring a world-class digital experience.
